Diana, I know our neighbor Hazel told me one day that she used to take a street car from Lincoln Park to go to work everyday. Maybe Hazel can verify where the turn around s were.

I am sincerely sorry Peter; that email was mistakenly sent from my laptop by someone in my house, and it was deleted almost immediately. I am sorry that you posted it for the list to see. It was rude, and I never mean to be rude.

I do have to say that, of the houses that will be affected by pylons and fewer parking spaces at west Kentucky and East Capitol, at least three if them are / will be occupied by senior citizens / folks with disabilities. It baffles me that these people’s situations were not taken into account when a suggestion was made (the DDOT said it was one suggestion by one person) and then incorporated into the plan. I have lived at the corner of Kentucky and East Capitol for 31 years and there have been few accidents at this corner. (An aside: To make the neighborhood safer, why don't we try to get the city to ban huge trucks on East Capitol?)

Peter, your ideas last night were rational, and you presented them eruditely, and it appears that the ddot people are willing to at least consider them, and for that I am glad, and thank you. But who knows if they really will incorporate your ideas? I feel as if I am barking into a wind tunnel. These people had money for an "experiment," and they are going to spend that money, without any input from the community, period. That's what I resented the most last night.

And here's my main argument: The ddot people (Will and Andrew) said multiple times that there had been a streetcar/trolley car turnaround at 13th and Kentucky, which explained the large space there. I did a little digging this morning and found three old streetcar maps (see below and note that one of them is from a ddot website). I also talked to an expert on DC's early trolley car/streetcar system. The maps show that there were never any turnarounds for any public vehicles at 13th and Kentucky, and the historian agreed, saying, "I checked the maps I have, and I only see the main East Capitol Street line, which turned around the block at 14th/15th, as you note, and which was where the East Capital Car Barn was located as the terminus of the line. I don’t see any line on Kentucky Avenue or any indication that a turnaround was located there. —That doesn’t mean it didn’t exist, but I don’t see any evidence of it." Why did last night's ddot representatives insist that it was true, even when challenged by some of us? If they are willing to make up something like that, why should we believe them about anything else they said at last night's meeting? When asked repeatedly for data, studies, rationale, assessments, even a few facts, the ddot had no answers, no promises.

Last night, there was no bending of the truth, there was no truth at all, and that is what makes me the angriest. I hate being lied to by anyone, but I especially hate being lied to by government officials.

Even if the end game may be a good cause (bike lanes), we should not let ourselves be led by the nose to fulfill this "experiment" when it is based on falsehoods and where there is missing data and few answers.

Hi,
I guess I am the jerk who suggested that we extend the curb or do something at the corner of KY and East Capital. Not sure that I said add Pylons, but something to slow down the cars when entering our street. The suggestion of a raised sidewalk was a good one too. To my knowledge, this is the only part of KY where there has been an accident in my 15 years on the block.

I expressed and re-iterated this need on the call yesterday as the new design added pylons where they were not needed and would not slow anything down. My intent was to remove the pylons as they were in the new design so the neighbors at the top of street could drop off groceries etc. as they have been as long as I have been on the street. No matter what we say, they will paint no parking stripes from the sidewalk and x feet in on the street.

It was pretty obvious from the call yesterday that a bike lane will go forth, so my goals was to see if we could budge their designs a bit to help reduce lost parking spots. For example, in an earlier recommendation I had also suggested that we make the bike lane straight at the corner of Ky south and Independence. It was now part of the new design and parking spots have been saved. The point is that they are willing to adjust.

I am not a fan of all the pylons and lost parking spots. However, I do think we can add bike lanes and cross walks in a smart ways to maintain the aesthetics our neighbors.

Btw, I think I am not alone is making this recommendation at the top of the street.

If there’s an alternative recommendation, I am sure they would be open to hearing them.

Lastly, I know this a passionate topic, but please don’t name call. It really does not help.

Thanks,

- Peter

Let’s please not forget the pylons on Kentucky @ East Capitol were not part of the original design & were added at the suggestion of one resident. DDOT says the advisory bike lanes have proven to slow traffic so adding pylons (& eliminating 20’ of curb space) is also suspect.

The streets of DC look as if Santa gave DDOT workers bedazzle guns with pylons for Christmas (instead of sequins, beads & glitter) and they are bedazzling everything in sight!
