Serious question about leaves:
What is wrong with letting leaves decompose in the tree box? A few years
ago, to my dismay, the treebox in front of my house was made SMALLER when
the sidewalk was changed from cement to brick, and now the bricks are
starting to shift and the roots are starting to poke out, and they need
some extra protection, as in mulch. A few years ago, the Washington Post
had a story about letting leaves decompose (naturally or with the help of a
shredder), generally saying that it's a good thing to do. Of course, dad
leaves are those which are higher in lignin and lower in nitrogen and
calcium. These include black walnut leaves contain natural herbicides that
will prevent seeds from germinating.
So - why not let leaves decompose in the boxes, especially if they are
looked after?
