Diana: We paid the amount of the federal tax refund for the installation . . . which was then refunded on my taxes for a net cost of 0. But we did front the money.

DC Solar gets the rights to PEPCO’s RECs (renewable energy certificates). I’m no expert, but my understanding is that one of these is issued when one megawatt-hour of electricity is generated and delivered to the electricity grid from a renewable energy resource. I believe that all energy companies, such as PEPCO, are required to provide some minimal level of their energy from renewable sources, and will pay different amounts for each REC depending on whether their jurisdiction does or does not have easy access to renewable energy sources. Since DC isn’t full of windmills and there is no space to build utility scale solar farms, it has to rely heavily on generating solar and so pays more for each solar REC . . . which is what makes it a reasonable business model for DC Solar to provide basically free installation. We’re an older couple and far better for us to have free installation and small to no electricity bills.

>> Barbara what do you mean when you say "they get the DC credits"? You said you own the system so does that mean you can sell the energy generated by your panels back to Pepco? Thanks for any light you can shine on this subject!

>> We went with DC Solar last year. Contacts: jacob at dcsolar.io <mailto:jacob at dcsolar.io> or kyle at dcsolar.io <mailto:kyle at dcsolar.io>. They have a unique pricing structure that only works for DC residents because of the way DC meets its alternative energy requirements. Anyway, the only thing we paid for installation (on our existing roof) was the amount of the federal tax rebate I received in April. . . so we got the system (we own, not rent) at $0 net cost. They get the DC credits; we get small to no bills from PEPCO as we run on sunshine. Very satisfied.
