The attached signs are posted up and down Pennsylvania describing the new configuration, and I don't think they've finished re-signing the stretch with the final signs explaining the bus lane to drivers. But the last panel describes the final configuration in which the bus lane is active during rush hour in just the rush hour direction (inbound in the morning and outbound in the evening). The bus lane becomes the parking lane the rest of the time. This is actually consistent with many of DC's roadways that are primarily commercial districts, like Massachusetts or Connecticut, in which parking is not allowed during rush hour but is allowed the rest of the day.

Billy

On Thu, May 18, 2023, 6:55 AM Jeffrey Spector <jspectoresq@gmail.com> wrote:

I think the parking situation is more nuanced and allows for parking in the bus lane during non-rush hour times. This road needed some kind of bike option, but this wasn’t it.
Worse from a planning perspective, the westbound buses *turn left* and so drive in the left hand lane, leaving the bus lane as a kind of hyper express lane for aggressive drivers who then slow down traffic when they have to merge left back into traffic again.
And I’m guessing riding your bike through a bus stop would be a real treat.
(I admit to having yelled at some, maybe many of the folks on this listserv to get off their cell phones while driving.) But I don't think I realized until just a few weeks ago that the plan for Pennsylvania Avenue was to eliminate all parking from the entire stretch from the Capitol to the river? In all honesty, that seems nuts to me. What I am especially concerned about is keeping the local retail surviving, which has been a huge thing especially post-pandemic. There is literally no place to park to load at Frager's, at the post office, etc. This also takes away all paid parking meters for that stretch which seems like a huge revenue loss for the city. And the actual design for the bike lane has it literally bisecting the place where people are standing to wait for the bus. Has anyone outside planning weighed in on this? Am I the only one who thinks this seems kind of nuts?
