We ordered them online from Home Depot. They connect over your home wi-fi network so you don’t need special wiring, they just have to be plugged in to a regular 120v outlet. Installing them is pretty easy, just a couple of screws and stringing the cord to wherever you’re going to plug them in. You can pay for a service where the video is kept for 60 days, but if you pull a specific clip you can keep it longer.

What I like about them is that they are recording all of the time. Previously we had a Ring motion-activated camera that ran on batteries and it missed stuff. When the robbery happened at the end of the alley this past Winter we had a great video of a cat, then the camera stopped recording just before the robber walked by. There is always a 15 or 30 second pause between recordings, so the camera totally missed him. That triggered our decision to get the plug-in cameras as well as the lights along the side of our house.

What remains to be seen is whether this makes any difference in preventing crime. The cameras aren’t exactly inconspicuous and the thief was looking around right under them, with our lights on. For that matter he stole the bike in broad daylight. And I doubt MPD is going to do an NCIS-level investigation to find this guy. It will probably help in the event he gets arrested for something else and then the will know who he is and can tie him to this and other crimes.

_______________________________________________
LincolnParkDC mailing list

To post to the list address your message to: LincolnParkDC@lincolnparkdc.info
When replying, please consider whether to reply to the sender only, or to the list, which is the default.
Not all replies are appropriate for the entire list.

Please do not send administrative requests to the list.
