Perhaps consider painting all the bike lanes one VERY bright color (red, green, etc.) so it would be uniformly obvious to all across DC. I believe this was depicted in one of those videos sent around ages ago. This would include all the areas of the city without the dreaded (and ugly) pylons and except for maintenance (repainting), fairly inexpensive.
