Right now the only way to get from the 100 block of Kentucky (east side) or 13th (west side) to the south is to cross in the middle of the street. My 6yo daughter goes to Payne so we have crossed this way every day since she was 3. It’s a little scary crossing with a small child while having to watch for traffic making the turn off of Independence which due to the wide intersection drivers tend to do rather fast. But the only alternative to crossing in the middle of the street is to walk another block north (to East Capitol) and another block back. So yes, I think the crosswalk is a valuable safety improvement.

It sounds like the folks on 13th are very lucky to be able to park right in front of their houses so frequently. I almost never get to park right in front of my house anyway, so I have a hard time seeing how a couple more or fewer parking places will make a noticeable difference. Perhaps an improvement to the design would be to keep the crosswalk, but instead of flexiposts use a lower-profile barricade like rubber curbs, that can still be driven over slowly so that the folks who live there can still access the curb to unload their groceries. And, perhaps the rules for spacing between the crosswalk and parking spaces don’t need to apply on the north side of the crosswalk since it’s a one way street, so visibility in that direction isn’t needed anyway. A crosswalk with tight spacing would be safer than the current situation where you have to squeeze between two random parked cars and dart across the street.

Jason

112 Kentucky
