Hi All -This is what I sent yesterday to Steve and asked that he share it with his list. I hadn't seen it come out yet, but when I saw Tom's email, thought I should send it around to you all asap. Please read on for more info

For a little more context, this project is for an "advisory" bike lane which basically gives bicycles a little more room in the striping design of the street. Kentucky Avenue already gets a lot of bike traffic, as many of us on this street
can attest. The paint markings will make the street seem narrower; If two cars are approaching from opposite directions, the two cars will drive slowly until they can move more into the middle of the street before getting around each other. The idea is for
the middle section to seem narrower, so that cars will drive more slowly through our neighborhood. Wide roads make car drivers think they can go faster than they should. A simple paint scheme can be a very effective tool to slow traffic without physically
narrowing the street.

DDOT has gotten approval to install advisory bike lanes on a few streets around town as a trial period to test the concept and see how it works. There have been several requests for speed humps on Kentucky, and advisory bike lanes are a
way to slow speeds on low volume roads without having to install speed humps.

There shouldn't be much, if any, space for parking lost. Where the signs are already too close to alleys or intersections, they'll just have to be moved back a bit. I don't think this is an issue on many blocks. Oh and we might also be
able to get a few flexiposts at the corner of East Cap and Kentucky to tighten the angle to slow down right turning vehicles, which has long been a problem.
