I believe I have read that although the statue was erected thanks to funds raised by emancipated slaves, they had nothing to do with the choice of the design. (Not hard to believe.) How about melting it down and replacing it with one showing someone shaking
Lincoln's hand, eye to eye like equals?? (I'm not seriously suggesting I, a white woman, get a vote. Just saying something else is probably in order with more acceptable iconography.)</div>
