This is going in an odd direction, but no… the Constitution does not protect the right to anonymity on a privately run listserv. The Constitution, especially the First Amendment, protects individuals from *government* action, not from the actions of private entities.

This is important to point out in an age where people run around thinking the first amendment protects them against any and all consequences of their speech. It very much does not.

Not to take a side here but anonymity is protected by the Constitution (first amendment). Trolling and bullying are both not the direction I hope this listserv takes regardless of who operates it. I got onto Crestwood's listserv -- though I don't live there -- when I needed help a resident stepped up and it would have been a nightmare without that. Building walls around community engagement and drumming up bias seems counter to a community listserv's purpose.

The right to anonymity, particularly in the context of speech, is a deeply rooted constitutional value in the United States, primarily protected under the First Amendment. This right allows individuals to express themselves, even controversial opinions, without fear of reprisal or public exposure. While the U.S. Constitution doesn't explicitly mention anonymity, the Supreme Court has recognized its importance in facilitating free speech and democratic discourse.

As Mia noted, all they have to do is sign their posts with the name they used to join the email listserve. If you read the definition of troll, you'd see that the posts last night from the Lincoln Park Newsletter troll account were doing exactly what is described in that definition. On a night when a person was shot and killed, all other posters were sharing details of what they saw and heard from authorities. The troll from the Lincoln Park Newsletter did not. Instead, they posted repeatedly, challenging neighbors on their first-hand accounts. The troll did not share relevant information, attempted to provoke and disrupt, and posted anonymously to avoid accountability.

You see, I am not a troll because I sign my posts with my name and even the block where I live. A troll does not. So, he's a troll.
