DC residents are asking Airbnb hosts to block out or raise their rates over
inauguration weekend. Inauguration Day is Jan. 20.
For those who raise their Airbnb rental rates, they are being asked to
donate a portion of their profits to organizations that stand up for morals
DC residents hold dear: democracy, women’s rights, immigrant rights, and
climate change.
“As DC residents prepare for a second Trump administration, the organizers
are looking back at what happened the during the first, and it was quite
frankly un-American,” the group told the Lincoln Park Newsletter.
“President Trump ordered heavily armed troops, law enforcement, and
low-flying helicopters into our city to disperse peaceful protests. Then he
denied Mayor Muriel Bowser’s request to deploy the National Guard during
the January 6th riot/insurrection.”
A Washington, DC-based resident who lists her home on Airbnb is behind the
grassroots effort
<https://substack.com/redirect/0154c57e-5540-4e57-94a9-385c8d2978d9?j=eyJ1IjoiMjgzNmh6In0.CTjPn5sCM4AIY4NC0IzEHQuNdp0zoRt_4U3mC1nSt3c>
to prevent supporters of President-elect Trump from being able to access
Airbnb properties during January’s inauguration events.
<https://substack.com/redirect/d6436107-2108-43e5-807f-ac557e0a2f45?j=eyJ1IjoiMjgzNmh6In0.CTjPn5sCM4AIY4NC0IzEHQuNdp0zoRt_4U3mC1nSt3c>
She decided to reach out to fellow Airbnb hosts with a request: Consider
taking your rentals off the market that weekend, or increase your prices
and donate the profits to liberal causes.
The goal, according to an email Stacy Kane and two friends are circulating
among community groups and city council members, is “to show Trump
supporters who are coming into the DMV that we do not welcome hate,
misogyny, or intentions to take over DC.”
The group notes that the U.S. Congress has introduced over 80 bills that
would attack our local democracy and deny rights and freedoms to people of
color, women, the LGBTQ community, immigrant communities, and full voting
rights and freedoms for the residents of the District of Columbia.
With the lack of full voting rights and representation in Congress, DC
residents and their Maryland and Virginia neighbors are doing one of the
only things they can to let the world know that there is no room for hate
in DC.
The Airbnb initiative was born out of a desire to “try to make any kind of
difference that we can in the situation we find ourselves in as D.C.
residents and just as human beings right now,” said Kane, a 40-year-old
charter school executive director

HERE ARE A FEW SENTENCES TO SHARE WITH YOUR RENTERS:
*Thank you for renting with us over the weekend of January 18th! You may
notice that our rates are high. That is because a portion of proceeds will
be donated to [INSERT CHARITY OF YOUR CHOICE]. The Trump administration has
promised to implement policies that threaten democracy and deny rights and
freedoms to people of color, women, the LGBTQ community, immigrant
communities, and full voting rights and freedoms for the residents of the
District of Columbia. We do not support these policies and instead support
policies built on inclusion and prosperity for all.*

CITY CONTINUES TO IGNORE PLEAS REGARDING LINCOLN PARK CROSSWALKSBy Jess

I am writing with concern about the safety of the crosswalks across East
Capitol Street into Lincoln Park. In the winter months when it is dark,
early safely crossing this busy street with my young children is very
difficult.
I can't be the first person to have this concern and would love to know the
history of any prior attempts and how I can best advocate. I have written
to Charles Allen but would love other suggestions.
I have one easy request -- to get the police to stop parking a car on the
western side of the crosswalk near Kentucky Ave. I assume they are doing
this as a speeding/crime deterrent; however, the result is that traffic
can't see you around the car when you want to cross.
I would also love to see: bright streetlights at the cross walks, a button
with flashers for pedestrians to activate, stop signs, and speed bumps to
slow drivers.

*EDITOR’S NOTE: Lincoln Park residents have repeatedly asked Charles Allen
to do something about maniac drivers aiming to run over small dogs, women
and children in crosswalks. Many of these pleas have been made to him
personally. He chairs the transportation committee. Little has happened for
years. *
*The council member is a nice man, but he is ineffectual when it comes to
resident pleas and bread-and-butter concerns, and instead he marshals his
time, staff, effort and resources toward powerful, monied special interests
(e.g., WABA '“Biker Bros,” and the get-out-of-jail-free-card DC “Justice”
Lab) that support and donate heavily to his campaigns. *
*Local issues — even as he is chairman of the council transportation
committee — get lip service. This is one reason that some residents backed
his recall — even as he falsely and maliciously slimed all recall backers
as carpet-bagging Republicans*.

Here’s how we do it*By Dennis Jones*
*To move forward with such a crosswalk proposal, we would need to follow
the process outlined by the District Department of Transportation (DDOT).
This includes gathering community input, developing a traffic control plan,
and submitting a formal application for review. Community support is a
critical component of this effort.*
*Here is a brief overview of the process:*
*1. Community Engagement: The first step is to build support among local
residents and businesses while addressing any concerns that may arise.*
*2. Contacting DDOT: DDOT oversees street conversions and can guide us
through the necessary requirements. This includes preparing a Traffic
Control Plan (TCP) and applying through their online permitting system
(TOPS).*
*3. Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC): Engaging with our local ANC is
crucial, as they can advocate for or address issues related to the
proposal.*
*4. Submission and Review: Once we gather input and prepare the required
documentation, we can formally request the conversion for DDOT’s
consideration.*
