Riding on the sidewalks is perfectly legal throughout the city EXCEPT in
the downtown business district roughly around K Street, 15th Street, Penn
and up to Mass over to 7th street or so. I don't really like it when an
adult whizzes past me on a bike or scooter on the sidewalk, but I get why
they do it. That's why we need more protected bike lanes so that bicyclists
will be able to get where they're going and feel safe from the cars that
are *much more of a threat* to pedestrians and bicyclists. You should see
how many times cars end up on sidewalks too, and how often they kill or
maim pedestrians in that space. I'd much rather take my chances with a bike
than a 2000-3000+ pound vehicle where the driver is protected by steel and
airbags, when I, as a bicyclist or pedestrian, is not.
But back to the real problem, which is that the 96 as well as many other
bus lines that serve our neighborhood are quite likely going away, and
probably forever. *Please comment on the WMATA site*, but be aware that
it's really hard to comment on a line that is being eliminated! I found
this out the other day when I was trying to comment, and all it would
prompt me to do is to comment on the NEW lines. It was super frustrating.
I'm going to keep going back to add more comments, and see if there's a way
to do it in a more general fashion instead of being forced into the prompts
that WMATA has set up.
Please also *call or email all the CMs including and especially the At
Large members, not just Charles Allen.* Frankly, I'd like to know what the
At Large members do, since it appears that when they are ostensibly
answerable to everyone in the city, it's really like they're not answerable
to any one. Robert White might be the only one up for reelection, but let's
put some pressure on him too!
I think it was someone in the email responses above who pointed out that
for those who can't ride a bike or walk long distances, which are all of
our mobility challenged or elderly neighbors, losing our local bus lines is
a massive setback. When I am too old to drive safely and need to give up my
car, but also can't ride my bike or walk, I was counting on the 96 being
around so I can age in place in my Hill home. It's deeply ironic to me that
I have lived here on the Hill for over 30 years, and nothing made me feel
like I needed to sell and move: Not the 90s drugs and prostitution in
Lincoln Park, not the Cap Hill public schools (which were great for all
three of my kids!), and not the new resurgence of crime on the Hill. But
now, losing a public transit connection that can get us all over the city
is making my husband and I wonder if we need to find a place in a more
centrally located, well-served public transit location.
