[Lincolnparkdc] Metro Proposing to Eliminate 96 Bus

Agree-I'm outraged at the loss of the 96 around Lincoln Park. If you look
at the map, you will see a huge gaping hole in all of eastern Capitol Hill.
The other "similar" route to the 96 will pick up along 8th street and
somewhat follow the old 96 route up 8th, left on H, then right on New
Jersey and up into NW to Tenley, I think. Obviously, that's a walk for me
(in the 100 bl of Kentucky) for example, from 1-2 minutes across the park
to 7-8 minutes down East Cap to 8th. The headways aren't even better.
What really boggles the mind is that the only bus to go directly to Union
Station is the renamed D6 - the similar 96 route would drop behind Union on
H I suppose, but think of all the commuters, school kids and others that
ride the 96 down Mass to Union every single day. A huge cut in service.
With this "Better Bus" visioning we were supposed to get more frequent
buses, better service, but those of us in east Cap Hill have now gotten
blatantly worse service and several routes have been completely eliminated.
I was studying the maps last week when this first became public, and all of
my DDOT colleagues were discussing it. We were all shocked. I was trying to
see if parts of NW had taken the same hit as Capitol Hill, and it really
looks like Cap Hill has lost the most. I have to confirm, but this will be
a big part of my comments if confirmed. It's a huge equity issue, but I am
sure WMATA will point to the lack of density on Capitol Hill as
some justification. Apparently the first visioning map with changes (which
were GREAT) that they released last year were only if they got a major
budget infusion, and since that didn't happen, this is what we get.
