Juneteenth commemorates U.S. Army Major General Gordon Granger delivering
to the people of Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865, General Order No. 3,
informing them that in accordance with Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation
Proclamation, "all slaves are free."

Over time, June 19th became the portmanteau, "Juneteenth," and a symbol of
independence from slavery.

Slavery would officially end with the ratification of the 13th Amendment on
December 6, 1865, but Juneteenth remains the emblematic date for the end of
slavery. Celebrated for many years by the African American community, the
date was made a federal holiday by President Biden in 2021.

serving Lincoln Park. We accept no money so we are not required to be a
501(c)(3) organization. That way you also don’t have to worry about lack of
accountability and wonder where your money goes. There is no overhead. All
contributions are in-kind — flowers and plants purchased by members and
service hours.

Member requirements are simple: Be nice to the park and nice to each other.
Pick up trash when you see it and pick up after yourself, your child and
your pet. Call the Park Service or Park Police if you see a problem.

If you do not want to be a free member of FRIENDS OF CAPITOL HILL PARKS,
you can resign and subscribe to the newsletter and be a non-member
subscriber by signing up for a very expensive, exclusive, premium
over-priced pay subscription. Dogecoin is accepted. In truth, the
newsletter does not really accept any money. Which is another way of saying
you are not allowed to give cash to the group.

We also hold no raffles because that would require, under DC law, getting a
permit. Really. What a pain. It is a violation to do so without a permit.
