for the reconstruction of Rumsey Aquatic Center – 6:30 p.m. at the North
Hall of Eastern Market.

Over the last several weeks, I’ve been having conversations with swimmers,
seniors, and neighbors of the pool to hear ideas and hopes for this big
opportunity in front of us. It’s a once-in-a-generation chance to reimagine
and rebuild this community pool and space in the heart of Capitol Hill. A
key theme I’ve heard from just about everyone is that the new pool needs to
have more lanes and more water – allowing more people to use the pool,
reducing conflicts competing for lanes between different users and
programs, and one day to even return some meets to be hosted at Rumsey.
I’ve also heard from several folks who would like to ensure we use this
opportunity to improve the alley between and connection to Eastern Market,
as well as remove large, inactive spaces like the brick wall running the
length of C Street SE.

I’m looking forward to hearing your ideas, and please know that leaders
from DPR, DGS, and the construction/design team will be on hand to outline
their next steps and hear your feedback and ideas. This is the first of
several conversations and public meetings that will be held in the coming
months. Construction will not take place until around this time next year,
so there’s a lot of work to do with the community to design something that
both excites us as a new community pool and hub, as well as meets the needs
of the neighborhood.
