I’m genuinely curious what your source is that self-funded stadiums are now the norm. Data I was reading as recently as 2022 was showing that new stadiums are still about 50% publicly funded which can leave tax-payers with a multibillion dollar bill per stadium. I’d love to see data so I can reflect on my position if I am wrong. Though I still feel that NFL stadiums do not bring in the same type of economic growth that baseball stadiums and hockey/basketball arenas do due to the limited use. There is also the argument to be made that we maybe wouldn’t want that type of growth in such a residential area.
Here is a link to the recording of the markup if anyone who missed it yesterday cares to watch: https://oversight.house.gov/markup/full-committee-business-meeting-67/
One last thought on the stadium, after years and years of promises from the city and fundraising, the Fort DuPont Ice project was nearly axed. When the mayor responded to the uproar, the project continued but the design was cut in half. Further, when my kids were at Maury Elementary, (granted, this was 5 years ago) the PTA paid the salary of TAs in the classrooms that the city did not provide a budget for. The PTA also paid for supplies like toilet paper and paper towels which were often running out. So if an NFL deal does include public funding, that is a non-starter for me.
Off-topic, but this is also good reading for anyone who has the time. While I’m not sure I agree with all his thoughts, I appreciate this part in particular….”It also emphasizes that character is formed and displayed as we treat others considerately. This requires not just a good heart, but good social skills: how to listen well. How to disagree with respect…How to be a good conversationalist. https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2023/09/us-culture-moral-education-formation/674765/

CAUTION: EXTERNAL MESSAGE
Ah, ANOTHER reason to IMPEACH Angela Alsobrooks! She has connected this specifically and directly to the redevelopment of the area at FedEx Field! Thank you for that.
How misleading to propose such a misguided and waste of taxpayers money in a redevelopment plan that she has specifically linked to FedEx Field. And how stupid to think that this development around a stadium would be a good use of taxpayer money. Impeach!
Do you have a link to her recall petition? This should be added to the charges against her and the governor. So misleading of her and the governor.
Impeach Wes Moore too.
How can someone be so stupid as to think that development centered around an NFL stadium would be a useful expenditure. Thank God that the local council member isn't as stupid as Wes Moore and Angela Alsobrooks!
As for the area around RFK, what do you think? Would this kind of expenditure around a self-funded NFL stadium (now the standard nationwide for stadiums) be a big waste of money?

The Blue Line Corridor plan is a transit-oriented redevelopment project that is independent of the stadium. It is not focused on the stadium. The $400 million will be spent on infrastructure and other development project (eg a new library, recreation and sports facilities, and a Union Market style food hall) regardless the team’s decision—although the details of the development may look different depending on whether there is a stadium.
The plan stretches back to at least to 2010. https://www.mncppc.org/DocumentCenter/View/844/Summary-and-Assessment-of-TOD-Plans-and-Design-Standards-Report-PDF <https://www.mncppc.org/DocumentCenter/View/844/Summary-and-Assessment-of-TOD-Plans-and-Design-Standards-Report-PDF> The latest version came out in 2021

https://www.princegeorgescountymd.gov/DocumentCenter/View/36074/26120_SOCA_FINAL
And by the way, as a recent story in DC.ist points out, the $400 million was committed before Moore became governor—he is riding the train not driving it. I don’t think you can impeach some one for activities that happened in the past that they were not part of. (Of course the House GOP looks like it just may test that idea). Moore did, however, get a chance to get in front of the issue when he voted for the project at the Maryland Board of Public Works. That vote had nothing to do with the stadium.
As was the case with the Navy Yard/Riverfront, a new stadium in the Blue Line Corridor area would be the icing on the cake, not (to mix metaphors) the catalyst. Which of course ends up favoring the PG county site because it sticks the stadium right in the middle of some thing exciting that is already happening. Which is exactly what happen with Nats Park.
The RFK campus can’t offer that.

The area around FedEx Field in Landover will be undergoing a facelift. Maryland officials voted to initiate the process of providing up to $400 millionin bonds toward developing the area as part of the Blue Line Corridor Plan.
The Maryland Board of Public Works is made up of Gov. Wes Moore, and others. I guess Wes Moore is a dummy, dumber than the people on this list serve, who obviously are smarter and know better. How did he get elected anyway? Impeach him.
None of the $400 million pledged for the FedEx-area project will go to the Commanders for a new stadium.

And before you bring up Nats Park, I would reminded everyone that the development at the Navy Yard was well underway before the Nats came to town. Nats Park was the icing on the cake.
What our neighbors in PG County want at the FedEx site can be done with or without a new stadium. My guess is that officials will be pushing for this project even if they don’t get the stadium.

You all have convinced me: The District is too incompetent and creatively blind to envision what to do with that property, which has sat festering for years.
DC lacks the leadership and the vision to create a world-class development on the river, unlike the progressive new governor of Maryland and the innovative minds of Prince George’s County, who are moving ahead on these plans around Fedex Field:
*
a vibrant sports and entertainment district
*
mixture of homes, apartments, stores, hotels, and other community spaces.
* An amphitheater, with between 7,500 and 10,000 seats
* A central library and cultural center, with a charter school nearby
* A field house for scholastic sports
* A food and market hall, modeled after Union Market in D.C.
The stadium authority signed off on a $10.5 million planning and design contract for the proposed Wayne K. Curry Civic Plaza, named for Prince George’s’ first Black county executive, which would attract food trucks, craft vendors and festivals, replacing a more sterile suburban environment.
No wonder Alsobrooks is the leading candidate to be the next US senator from Maryland.
But hey, at least we have a very expensive streetcar on H Street that goes nowhere at speeds of 4 mph and rampant crime fueled by lenient sentencing laws.

The question is the construction costs. Los Angeles new stadium was 5 million. Others have come in about 2 billion dollars. With the public ie tax payer footing half the bill. So let’s assume 2 billion. With dc absorbing 1 billion of the costs. What’s the benefits to the city and are they worth a billion. Hopefully dc is no longer considering it as part of an Olympics bid.
Than the taxpayers would be on the hook for 2 or 3 billion.

Since the SoFi Stadium (one of the newest stadiums out there) and the possibility of various non-NFL events being held at an NFL stadium weres mentioned, I went to the website to see what they had scheduled thinking that I might be one of those people totally lacking in imagination and vision and suffering from sclerotic thinking. So what did I find on their website? That in 2021 there were 15 non-football events. In 2022 there were also 15 but one of the concerts was the Super Bowl half time show so not sure I should count that as a non-football event. I also went to the Chiefs Arrowhead Stadium to see what events where scheduled there that were non-NFL events…. The only one listed was the upcoming October Beyonce concert….
NFL teams play 10 football games during the preseason and season….so I am wondering what else happens during the other days of the year? World Cup and Olympics are kind of infrequent events.

Not so. That’s 1970s style stadiums. Room for both.
In fact a stadium (Nats Park) can and must must have all of that to be successful: entertainment, restaurants, housing, senior living, recreation center, sports fields, medical offices, and a river front park
That’s exactly what Angela Alsobrooks is offering in PG at the FedEx site — right now.
So much backward thinking. Lack of imagination. No vision. Sclerotic thinking. Look at stadiums built in the last few years — not 20, 30, 50 years ago.
Where do you think Beyoncé, Springsteen, Elton John, World Cups, Olympics go?

Also even though there is enough room, we won't get mixed use or the new recreation center with a new swimming pool that the Mayor promised. We'll get parking lots because you can't build a stadium without parking lots.

Wednesday at 10:00 AM the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability will debate the bill in a scheduled markup. (https://oversight.house.gov/release/comer-announces-full-committee-markup/), announced by Chairman James Comer (R-KY). The bill would 'transfer the administrative jurisdiction' of RFK from the Secretary of the Interior to the Administrator of the General Services Administration (GSA), allowing the city to revitalize the site. The bill would extend D.C.'s lease with the federal government for 99 years and would allow the city to pursue mixed-use development on the RFK site, which could include commercial properties, housing projects, or even a stadium.
Introduced Session
H.R. 4984
118th Congress
Bill Summary
A BILL To amend the District of Columbia Stadium Act of 1957 to provide for the transfer of administrative jurisdiction over the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium Campus to the Administrator of General Services and the leasing of the Campus to the District of Columbia for purposes which include commercial and residential development, and for other purposes.
