[Lincolnparkdc] postscript on the motor vehicle theft data

Whereas the “Motor Vehicle Theft” data plots I provided are from MPDC and show a worrying, even alarming, increasing trend, the data may not be what you are looking for when thinking about carjackings. For one thing, it’s not clear whether carjackings are included in the offense I reported on or  in the “robbery” offense  reported by MPDC. There is no “carjacking” offense in the MPDC data I downloaded.

Since poking around a bit more I found an MPDC dashboard that reports on carjackings specifically: https://mpdc.dc.gov/node/212492. The data there are not as comprehensive as the available downloadable data. For example, It provides data by MPDC district but not by ward. Unfortunately, I cannot find where this specific carjacking  data is downloadable. Not surprisingly, the number of carjackings is much less than the number of motor vehicle thefts.

That said, I stand by the data I presented as reported by MPDC. But you need to understand what the offense is.

These are the offense categories that are available for download: THEFT/OTHER, MOTOR VEHICLE THEFT, ASSAULT W/DANGEROUS WEAPON, THEFT F/AUTO, BURGLARY, ROBBERY, HOMICIDE, SEX ABUSE, ARSON. “THEFT F/AUTO” refers to theft from an auto. There is also information as to whether any given offense involved a gun.
