Deborah,

I appreciate your insights.

If in your conversation with a policeman you learned it’s known who are perpetrating these crimes, have you a way to explore this further and identify why this knowledge is not linked with apprehension?

Thanks,

Beth

Everyone can sign up for the alerts if they like so what is the added value of them coming directly to the list? The value of the list, in my view, is the group exchange. In that regard it offers a digested version of the events as well as commentary, support, and potential mobilization. Not linking the crime alert system to the list allows some folks a little breathing room in the midst of the chaos. Anyone who does not want that breathing room can simply sign up for the alerts. This would be my preference and it seems to be working fine in that vein now.

While I genuinely believe the police, with some political pressure, are doing their best, they and the social work teams have been chronically understaffed since Covid; they are tired, their morale is low, etc. How can they enlist citizens to actually be eyes and ears for them? Does Neighborhood Watch work, for example? I spoke to one cop this week who said they know who the groups of youth are that are committing a lot of these crimes, but he didn't give me the impression there was much they could do about it. Why is that? I got the sense that they are flailing, without much hope of making a dent. Moreover, I heard recently from Allen that the 911 system is a mess. How can it be fixed? It is, indeed, a complex problem--but how can police, social workers and the like receive enough resources--financial, legal, and human--including from within the community-- to help the city get past this very disturbing escalation?
