I had my car stolen 2 years ago.  I was unloading groceries.  They followed me home from Safeway.  They drove up beside my car, one guy jumped in my car, and drove way (with the tailgate up) and the car they were driving drove out in front of mine, so couldn't see the license.  This happened in the middle of the day, with workmen at the house next door, people on the sidewalk and neighbors outside.  
I had just put groceries on my steps, and was about 10 feet away.  

They found my car about 6 months later.  It was over  in SE, across the river, less than 4 miles away.  Still intact.  At that point, it belonged to the insurance company.  We bought a new car the next day, after the steal.

BTW....they got my keys, my phone, my purse....everything.  We had to have our house rekeyed and I had to get a new phone, and new ID and new CC.  It was a total PITA. suzi evans 124 13th St. SE
