To: ANC-6A Announcements <anc-6a at googlegroups.com<mailto:anc-6a at googlegroups.com>>

Colleagues, Neighbors, Friends:

I'm emailing the larger ANC 6A group to broaden the reach of several previous updates I provided regarding the fatal shooting incident that occurred last night on Tennessee Ave, just north of C St NE. For those of you who are in my SMD - 6A05 - or if you are interested in receiving additional information, please don't hesitate to sign up to receive updates at: https://groups.google.com/g/anc-6a05-updates

I'm reaching out with the hope that there may still be some additional details our community may be able to share with the police. If you have any video or information you haven't already shared with MPD, they can be reached at (202) 727-9099 or you can text MPD at 50411. Both methods are staffed 24 hours/day, and you can choose to remain anonymous if you'd prefer.

I'm summarizing all of the confirmed information that we've learned since the incident occurred just under 24 hours ago.

At approximately 10:20 PM last night, 16-OCT-23 there was a shooting involving two vehicles on Tennessee Ave, just north of the intersection with C Street. The incident resulted in one victim, the driver of the vehicle, deceased at the scene of the incident. A passenger was injured, after being shot in the foot and shoulder, but is in stable condition. The second vehicle - described by witnesses at the scene as a white sedan or hatchback - fled the location.

Previous reports from last night had indicated a separate/related vehicle crash at 14th St and D St NE. My understanding is that there was not a separate crash/incident, rather a large first responder presence in the area as that is the direction in which the injured passenger fled, seeking assistance from neighbors.

MPD towed the victim’s vehicle, collected shell casings from the crime scene, interviewed witnesses, and are attempting to identify any further witnesses or video that is available.

We also learned today that the victim is a resident of this neighborhood, living just down the street on Tennessee Ave from where this incident took place. I had a brief opportunity to speak with some of his family earlier today, and extend my condolences to the neighbors, friends, and families who are grieving his loss.

I understand, appreciate, and echo the sadness, concern, and frustration that many neighbors have expressed to me in the past 24 hours. My wife and I walk our two kiddos to/from school every day past the scene of an incident I won't soon forget. I look forward to working with the community, our public safety officers, and elected officials to educate, inform, and seek collaborative and actionable solutions to enhance public safety.

While it may seem elementary, one way we can all contribute is to be vigilant. The DC Police Department offers rewards for gun arrests or tips that help to solve violent/deadly crimes. As listed above, you can call or text MPD - anonymously if you'd prefer - at (202) 727-9099 or text information to 50411. Video cameras or doorbells are very helpful, provided that the video is recorded/stored and is able to be shared with the authorities. D.C. offers a rebate program for the actual cost of an individual camera (up to $200) with a maximum rebate of $500 for residential properties. Additional information can be found at: https://ovsjg.dc.gov/page/private-security-camera-rebate-program

I look forward to continuing this conversation. Please don't hesitate to reach out if I can be of further assistance in the interim.

Best,
Dave
