Neighbors,
We're taking a break this week for Thanksgiving, but will resume walking
next Wednesday, Nov 29th.
We've had really good turnout thus far for walks on Wednesday and Friday
nights, with a few stalwarts that reliably make every walk (you know who
you are)!. As for tangible results, we've identified and fixed three
street lamps, redirected a car going the wrong way down a one-way street
and (we think) made a few scofflaws think twice about hanging out near
Lincoln Park. The intangibles are even better. The MPD Officers that have
walked with us have been fantastic...we've learned a great deal about their
day-to-day, how they view the current crime situation and some of the
challenges they face (historic staffing shortfalls and a reluctance to
enforce/intercede in various situations due to concern about scrutiny of
their actions are two recurring themes). I also think that when MPD sees
that we are invested in our neighborhood, it adds a human element to their
mission and motivates them to perform. And of course, the walks have been
a great opportunity to meet and get to know neighbors--so many talented and
dedicated people in our community!
So, if you haven't done so already, I encourage you to sign up for a
walk--it's not only good exercise, you get to spend time with great people
and get to know our local MPD Officers in a whole new way. Eyes on Lincoln
