Hello Justice-seekers,
We know that communities across the District are facing increased crime — from property theft and carjackings, to murders by gun. What can we do? WIN is organizing people online and in-person today (Wednesday, November 8) to be a presence at a public safety hearing. And on Thursday, November 9, they are co-hosting a discussion with an author with public safety solutions for families and our communities.
Please respond to this email to let me know if you plan to attend either of these gatherings. Thank you!
Onward ‘til we all thrive,
Elissa
P.S. Help St. Augustine build faith-filled power with other congregations — attend the next WIN Action Team Meeting. The link is below.

>From WIN: We encourage you to join us in person to make an impact since most testimonies are via Zoom, and we want to emphasize how policies affect real people. Author Zach Norris Discusses Public Safety Policy That Can Keep Our Communities Safe
Thursday, 11/9, at 7 PM (Online)
On Thursday, November 9, 7:00 PM-8:30 PM, WIN is co-sponsoring a virtual conversation with member congregation All Souls Church Unitarian and author Zach Norris. Can you attend on behalf of St. Augustine and report back to our ministry? Reply to this email if you can, thank you!
In response to increased crime in the District, both Mayor Bowser and Council Member Brooke Pinto (Chair of the Committee on the Judiciary and Public Safety) have put forth multiple policy proposals. Unfortunately, many of the proposed changes reflect outdated and/or discredited approaches grounded more in fear than effectiveness or ethics. They are likely to create more harm, not less.
>From WIN: As WIN works with our elected officials on these immediate issues, we also need to continue building a movement for holistic, long-term, sustainable change. To that end, we invite you—ideally with a team of people from your religious community—to participate in an upcoming Zoom session on Thursday November 9 <https://saintaugustine-dc.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=e44c815ba4f304a20c4fe0e8e&id=1b7bb90ce6&e=6fe3182b54> with author Zach Norris. In his book DEFUND FEAR: Safety with Policing, Prisons, and Punishment, Norris lays out a radical way to shift the conversation about public safety away from fear and punishment and toward growth and support systems for our families and communities.
We hope this conversation will help us imagine a path beyond the binaries of “tough” versus “soft” on crime and “us” versus “them”. Together, we can envision how to hold people accountable while still holding them in community, intervene in systems that unnecessarily magnify harm, and strengthen the social fabric of our city.
