Neighbors,

Please join if you can. Together with fellow neighbors Suzanne Wells, Gina Arlotto, and many others, I organize bike and walk to school days at Lincoln park. These events bring me hope and joy.

However, I personally feel my heart grow heavier and heavier each year, as we mourn children and families are killed or injured on our streets. I find it harder and harder to encourage families and neighbors to walk and bike when motorists behave so recklessly. We need our laws and infrastructure to support the safe routes we dream of.

Thank you and hope to see you there.

Meet at the Wilson building at 5:30 p.m. on Wed., July 27

Hi Sandra,

Despite the District’s purported commitment to reducing traffic fatalities to zero by 2024, 21 people have been killed by drivers so far this year. Of those, four peoples’ lives were taken in the past month.

Only continued pressure from constituents will force the District’s decisionmakers to create a city in which no one is killed by a driver. Volunteers are organizing a rally at 5:30 p.m. on Wed., July 27, in front of the Wilson building. We encourage you to join if you are able.

Rally and Protest for Streets That Don't Kill People
5:30 p.m., Wed., July 27
John A. Wilson Building, 1350 Pennsylvania Avenue NW
Wear white, bring water, be ready for rain, and invite your neighbors

While this is not a Greater Greater Washington event, we are supportive of those who have volunteered to organize it. You can find more details on Facebook here<https://click.everyaction.com/k/48353848/357908029/-2112917217?nvep=ew0KICAiVGVuYW50VXJpIjogIm5ncHZhbjovL3Zhbi9FQS9FQTAwNS8xLzc5MzE1IiwNCiAgIkRpc3RyaWJ1dGlvblVuaXF1ZUlkIjogImRmMTcxMDNiLTFkMGQtZWQxMS1iNDdhLTI4MTg3OGI4M2Q4YSIsDQogICJFbWFpbEFkZHJlc3MiOiAic21vc2Nvc29taWxsc0Bob3RtYWlsLmNvbSINCn0%3D&hmac=7zfVjgsAJWTXltYrRV4X3SwLoR_SpHUTYZ1GqxG5dNk=&emci=7c10ce0e-170d-ed11-b47a-281878b83d8a&emdi=df17103b-1d0d-ed11-b47a-281878b83d8a&ceid=5767054>. Please note that the page contains visual and verbal representations of traffic violence.

We will continue, as always, to push the executive and the D.C. Council to change our deadly status quo. We are grateful to you for working alongside us over the past several years, which has resulted in the passage of the Vision Zero omnibus bill by the DC Council, and the introduction of multiple additional traffic-safety bills. But we are under no illusion that those policies are sufficient. We hope that we can keep joining together with you to show that zero traffic deaths is a priority for so many District residents and visitors.

Our thoughts at GGWash are with the victims’ families and friends, and with you, too. Seeing the names of those who have lost their lives at the hands of a driver is always tremendously hard for me, and, if you also need to share or discuss any similar feelings, my inbox is always open, at abaca at ggwash.org<mailto:abaca at ggwash.org>.

Thank you,
Alex
