I have lived five houses below East Capitol Street on the west side of Kentucky Avenue SE since 1963.  We have seen very few accidents in all those years.  However, the intersection between E. Cap and KY is a dangerous one with many more users in recent years.  West bound bicycles coming off the sidewalk in front of 1207 E. Cap. need to be cautious as do east bound pedestrians, crossing to use the cross walk in front of 1207/9 E. Cap. in order to cross to Lincoln Park.
The sidewalk in front of 1203 E. Cap is extremely busy with pedestrians, some who are elderly. two nearby who are legally disabled, and others of all ages from preschool to seniors who may or may not be walking dogs or pushing baby carriages.  In addition there is a bus stop for Metro east bound lines 96 and 97 in front of 1203 where people wait to board or get off busses. Tour busses also discharge and pickup groups crossing to Lincoln Park.Needless to say this, is an extremely busy few yards.  Everyone should be cautious.  It would be helpful if bike riders going west bound would ring a bell or shout out to notify pedestrians that they are passing by.  Also remember that people actually live in houses at E. Cap. and KY and do sometimes need to unload items or receive deliveries.  And for those who are unaware of it, houses closer to Lincoln Park are taxed by DC at a higher rate!
Most of the bicycles who cross from the east side of Ky to 12th street, turn north to use the cross walk in front of 12th and E. Cap and go on to Lincoln Park.
Everyone needs to be careful using this area.  No vehicle owners, including those who own more than one,  should be forced to or are currently planning on giving up parking spaces!
Instead, let us all try to be considerate of others keeping in mind that police and emergency vehicles often use heavily populated Kentucky Avenue.
Stay safe!
