[Lincolnparkdc] lincolnparkdc Digest, Vol 36, Issue 24

Christopher Bolcik chris at bolcik.com

I think if you read the accounts you will see BOTH were at fault. The car did not come to a full stop at the stop sign. The bike was going the wrong way down a one way street. There are clear one way traffic arrows painted in the bike lanes. Both should receive a fine of, say $500. This may change their behavior – the car driver might now stop at he stop sign and the bicyclist may stop breaking the law going down the wrong way down a one way street.

The solutions in this twitter feed to eliminate parking around the park is stupid. Parking is eliminated between 12th and Kentucky already, giving vehicles a clear line of site to see any law abiding cyclist.

Everyone has to obey the law for this to work. Both car drivers and cyclists. No exceptions.

Stating the obvious: A confirming reason yet again to slow traffic down on the block. Its not like it's an unknown problem in the neighborhood.
DDOT"S deaf ears and DC Council's greed to put high revenue generating speed cameras behind RFK where there are no homes and very few people.

Front bike tire was run over by back wheel of car. You have to think about why that would have happened. Probably why biker didn?t want to report it. Mia

Has anyone thought the biker did not file a report because HE was responsible? Certainly not saying that is always the case, but it does happen. I live at 148 13th Street SE and frequently see bikers flying through the complicated intersection without slowing down as they interact with cars.

This was in reference to the Kentucky Avenue/independence Avenue intersection on the NE corner that now includes a cross walk, two bike lanes and cut through for cars - complicated for sure.

I concur with Ed?s observation. I too frequently have seen many bicyclists come up Kentucky and then proceed to go west on East Cap AGAINST eastbound traffic. Recently eastbound traffic included MPD cruiser. Bicyclist realized criuser was no going to yield to him, gave up and instead headed north into Lincoln Park.

Before we begin to pull the scabs off of the wounds of the bike lane
debate, in tis case, none of us knows the facts. Let's be thankful that it
appears nobody was hurt.

I will use this as a lesson for my kids that they as bike riders need to be
careful and I as a driver need to be careful because when cars and bikes
collide, bad things happen.
