Gina,Thank you for this update.  Steve has been here recently to check the elm between 113 and 111 KY. because we reported a dead branch.  A team came about a week ago and removed a couple of dead branches in hopes of saving the tree.  Steve is watching it very carefully.Hazel Kreinheder

Hello neighbors-
I happened to be outside today when Steve McKindley-Ward with DDOT's Urban Forestry division came by to check a tree on our block. Sadly, he told me that the tree in front of 127 Kentucky will need to be removed due to Dutch Elm disease. He said that a sure sign is when the leaves come out and immediately turn brown and crinkly, as this tree is showing. This symptom typically happens between May - June, so Steve said during these months he routinely drives around in our neighborhood scanning our beautiful old elms for symptoms.  He tries to catch them early enough and have it removed before it can infect more trees next to it or even the elms across the street. He said that the disease spreads via roots or a beetle that carries the fungus. 
Unfortunately, there is no treatment that can save the tree. He is putting in an emergency request to have the tree removed. It will most likely happen next week. I learned also that the trees on poopy island are all disease resistant elms, which is good, even though they have some issues of large branches dropping as they get bigger.  DDOT is trying to diversify the inventory throughout the city so we might get a London Plane tree in this location. There is a London Plane tree in the tree box in front of the parking sign at the alley on the north end east side of Kentucky (directly across the street from 115 Kentucky, if that helps.) Steve expects to plant a new tree this fall/winter.

I am also attaching a photo I took today after Steve left showing clearly the brown leaves and the infected limbs juxtaposed with some branches that have green leaves.
