[Lincolnparkdc] The work on 13th

They were using a “vac hoe”, where they dig a little then vacuum out the dirt and stones.  They can’t use a regular backhoe or excavator if they aren’t sure where the lines are, since they might sever one.  Even once they know where it is, they would use a vac truck for the last few feet of digging.

A vac truck is slow going but safer.   And they can be very loud since it takes a powerful motor to suck up dirt and rocks and bricks and whatever else is down there.  But it beats having a blackout or water main break.

I spoke an hour ago with one of the workers, who said they were conducting a survey of the pipes, which required them to bore through the concrete. He added that a renovation of the pipes is planned, so I guess we will see a good deal if work in that area in the near future.
