How La Plaza Stays Open: No Pay for Owner: Many local restaurants have
closed because of the pandemic, but La Plaza (629 Pennsylvania Ave., SE) has
managed to stay open because the owner Henry Mendoza, originally from El
Salvador, has not paid himself for six months, Hill Rag reports. He has
retained all nine employees, too. He always keeps La Plaza open on
Thanksgiving and Christmas day. "Even on holidays," Mendoza said, "people
are looking for food. This is what I fight for, the American dream." Story:
