[Lincolnparkdc] Different opinion on the design issues

I think you are correct. But will all know the cheapest way will be the first option. Many of us have paid money to live here and are relying on the value of our homes to see us through retirement and have a legacy for our children. I raised two kids on Capitol Hill in three houses. One bordered on Pennsylvania Avenue at 8th St. and our current on Kentucky and Infependence.

Hi neighbors, I just want to point out that the piling on against DDOT’s design is not universal. I’m looking forward to changes that slow the cars and make our streets safer for parents and kids.

I wholly understand that some of our neighbors may need additional accommodations based on the current design. But, please think about all your neighbors with little walkers and bikers. I fear for my kids’ lives every time we park on Indy, or cross it. Slower is safer. Pylons slow the outbound traffic. Any safety improvement DDOT can make is long overdue and welcomed in my book. Can we be on the same page on this at least?

I was on a call with Will today and we were talking through reducing the number of flexposts with the design engineers by a lot. And yes, creating a permanent curb is infinitely more expensive, and flexiposts?are just as effective in practice. That might be considered for a later phase of this project, which is a pilot project to gather data for the Fed Dept of Transportation and Fed Highways.?

Why not put down an actual curb to outline the path that is permanent in the ground to truly separate the traffic from cars and pedestrians?? This is what I have seen in Europe and it seems to work well there?? Has that been considered?? In that case, we may not need to make the paths as long and slow the cars down.?
But I suppose it is a cost issue as well.

I?d much rather have flexposts to get car drivers to slow down and pay attention to all the kids and older folks trying to make their way across our streets. The Kentucky/Independence/13th intersection is especially confusing and dangerous for people crossing. I think we?ll all be pleased with the resulting slower traffic.?

Charles, We have grave concerns about the pylons proposed to create bike lanes on Kentucky Ave and 13th St SE. Not only are the hideous, they will not allow those of us who live near the corner of those streets and Independence Ave to park even temporarily to drop off passengers or goods. Three of the corner houses are occupied by elderly widows and this will be crippling for them. All the residents near the corners are over 60. Parking on out streets is already a nightmare and we sometimes have to walk blocks in the dark after finally locating a space. This is worse during times of street cleaning when we can only park on one side of Independence. Please do not let this go forward . It will reduce our property values and negatively impact our lives. Sharon Raimo

You?re right, Peter. The plans show 60 pylons (or whatever term you want to
use) for this intersection.Unfortunately cheap and awful is the norm here,
not a more expensive investment in infrastructure that combines safety with
an attractive street scape.
