And yes, creating a permanent curb is infinitely more expensive, and flexiposts are just as effective in practice. Why not put down an actual curb to outline the path that is permanent in the ground to truly separate the traffic from cars and pedestrians? This is what I have seen in Europe and it seems to work well there? Has that been considered? In that case, we may not need to make the paths as long and slow the cars down.
But I suppose it is a cost issue as well.

Also speed bumps are not effective because people slow down for the jump and then speed as soon as they’re over. So we’d have extremely bumpy roads if we wanted to effectively slow traffic. I’d much rather have flexposts to get car drivers to slow down and pay attention to all the kids and older folks trying to make their way across our streets. The Kentucky/Independence/13th intersection is especially confusing and dangerous for people crossing. I think we’ll all be pleased with the resulting slower traffic.

Not only are the hideous, they will not allow those of us who live near the corner of those streets and Independence Ave to park even temporarily to drop off passengers or goods. Three of the corner houses are occupied by elderly widows and this will be crippling for them. All the residents near the corners are over 60. Parking on out streets is already a nightmare and we sometimes have to walk blocks in the dark after finally locating a space. This is worse during times of street cleaning when we can only park on one side of Independence. Please do not let this go forward .
