[Lincolnparkdc] ISO beginner guitar advice

Hi all:  

My amazing and wonderful husband has been saying that he might like to learn to play the guitar.  I'd love some advice about how to buy a reasonably good quality beginner guitar without spending a lot of money since I'm not 100% sure that he will decide to follow through.  I'm also a big believer in buying second-hand.  Any guitar heroes out there willing to give me some advice?  I know exactly zero.  Zip.  Bupkis.
