After fretting and reading endlessly about this online, I asked a friend who was a professional picture hanger, that is, he worked for a company that hangs shows at various Smithsonians and other museums in the area. Surprisingly, he said just pound in picture hangers that have steel nails. He suggested Ook. If a picture is particularly heavy, use two to balance the weight. They go in very clean, but of course I don't know how they'll come out.
