We've lost some great restaurants over the years. Before Montmartre, in the 1980s La Brasserie was my spot for French food and a special meal out on the Hill (Gaby's la bourride, for example). Other standard-setters for their time were 209 1/2 and the Broker, so let's remember those pioneers in better dining, too, who chose a Hill location. This loss is sad, too, and even more so, when with every loss, one can't help but wonder if there is any way that we could have helped make it work. I wish we could encourage them to reopen somewhere. One of the owners probably is right: we need to rethink a new concept in dining with different spatial arrangements and accommodations. Right now no one seems to have the answer. Maybe together we can help them figure it out. But in the meantime, we're losing too many businesses and of all sorts.Yesterday when I saw Montmartre's door open, there was hope that they were thinking about how to reopen. Instead, they said they were closing. I bought a few things as memories and to help them get rid of inventory. But the real memories are the delicious meals, the wines, the lovely service, the chef checking out the scene from the kitchen, the convivial atmosphere, and whiing away an evening on the patio where one could also enjoy the neighborhood. It was never too "important" to relax and they had a clever idea to pair it with a pizza place. Whether it's your or my favorite place or not, whether a humble or sophisticated spot, with every empty storefront that I pass these days, I wonder not only if we could have done more but what it will take to keep them--and us--going.

Facepalm: I was trying to make my wife and sister in law feel better about the loss of our favorite pizza place... and I replied to all instead. I can’t agree more.

Jenis is great, but no consolation for the loss of Montmartre and 7th Hill who have been mainstays in our neighborhood. Montmartre was the first truly "nice" special occasion restaurant to take a chance on the Hill before it became a place anyone else would consider. It's super depressing. Gina A.

Neighbors:
I heard through my network that both of these neighborhood restaurants have closed permanently, out of business. Anyone confirm this unfortunate development?
Thanks, take care, stay safe,
