Commissioner,
The cameras going up in the vicinity of E Street and Kentucky Avenue are related to the Advisory Bike Lanes concept we’re implementing, first on E Street. Here’s a recent article about them: https://ggwash.org/view/76601/experimental-advisory-bike-lanes-great-weight-e-street-capitol-hill. They’re unrelated to Covid.
As for 11th/Independence, it may be part of the same study, or separate as part of our routine replacement of cameras around the city. I’ll find out more tomorrow, as we’re actually doing our routine crash site visit (virtually) for the terrible crash last week.

At 11th and Independence SE the police just installed a speed indicator, thankfully. Speed has always been a problem at this intersection despite the four traffic lights, and a year and a half ago a police car on a chase ran the red light and struck a SUV which destroyed our fence and rose garden and severely damaged our porch. Last week a stolen car with multiple passengers ran the red light going north at 12:30 am and struck a car legally going east. Various cars were hit and the stolen car spun around and burst into flames and then exploded incinerating one occupant as the rest fled. Horrendous. Article in the Post today how vehicle speed is accelerating with the pandemic. Anything that can be done to reduce speed here is necessary, speed bumps on 11th Street would be a good idea.

Hi all-
I recently started working at DDOT in the Active Transportation Division which plans for new bike lanes, and I haven't heard anything about bike lanes either planned or suggested for Kentucky Ave. I've only been here a few months, so it's entirely possible I just haven't heard about a study here. I sent a message into the rest of my co-workers asking for clarification for what the cameras are monitoring. I'll let you know what I find out.
I've also learned via the Newhilleast Facebook group that these cameras have also gone up at 12th and C Street SE and South Carolina and Kentucky. It could be an overall traffic study for speeds and traffic volume, which I for one, would welcome, considering the near misses almost daily as car drivers speed while making the easy angled right turn off of East Capitol onto Kentucky. Drivers also routinely run the stop sign at 12th/East Cap and Kentucky/East Cap and I'm also sick of the car drivers who won't stop for pedestrians in the crosswalks into the park.
I also want to remind folks that bike lanes can be accommodated on streets while preserving parking, so let's not immediately assume that DDOT is coming to take our parking. Speaking as a car owner who gets as annoyed as anyone when I can't find a space to park, I have to remind myself that streets are public space-not just free parking for our cars. It is also there for bicyclists, pedestrians, skaters, scooters, skateboarders, joggers: any and all travelers who need to get from point A to point B safely.
Best,
Gina A.

Hi Hazel,
No, I don’t have any other information. I noticed the installation of these yesterday and asked what they were doing. They said it was for a study for possible bike lanes. That’s all I know currently. I would highly doubt that they would remove parking on Ky Ave.

Steve,
You do have any more details? Are they planing on marking lanes like on East Capitol or banning parking on the 100 block of KY Ave? There are at least three homes with handicapped residents on the west side who need to be able to have parking and access to their residences. We have not asked to reserve a space for our car in order not to create problems for our close and very kind neighbors.

Anyone know when or why these went up? I’m guessing they’re counting cars because it doesn’t seem that they could be analyzing speed.
