Update on the URNS/rodent issue

The National Park Service has had an agreement with D.C. Department of
Health to treat rodents in D.C. national parks, which includes Lincoln
Park. While D.C. Department of Health can best speak to the methods used to
abate rats, non-neurotoxin rodenticides have been used in D.C. national
parks. Trained staff from the DOH and the NPS use every safety precaution
to properly apply the rodenticide powder inside active rat burrows. We have
received concerns from community members about evidence of rats in urns in
Lincoln Park. We will not be using rodenticides in the urns at this time.
The NPS is exploring other ways to keep rats out of the urns, such as
placing rocks and wire mesh and/or planting plants such as lavender that
are unappealing to rats.
