DPW’S UPCOMING YARD WASTE PROGRAM
During this call, I learned that DPW is planning to change its yard waste
pickup program. It will be effective in early May and be formally
introduced before then. Currently the process, which is for residences
only, allows one to place out up to 5 paper bags of yard waste. Bags are
collected when space is available during regular trash/recycling pickups.
Under the new plan, residents will need to contact 311 by phone or online
to obtain a date for pick up (similar to how bulk pickup works). Up to 20
bags can be picked up per appointment. Yard waste, however, needs to be
placed in the large paper bags sold at hardware and other stores. These
bags of waste will be composted while anything in plastic bags will not.
DPW plans to clearly define what is and isn’t “yard waste” but here are
some candidates: weeds, twigs, grass cuttings, up-rooted plants. In
addition, branches no more than 4 feet in length can be bundled for pick
up.
