[Lincolnparkdc] Lincoln statue

Hi Muriel and neighbors,
google: lincoln statue park square boston 


I read about this statue in Boston yesterday that some people there don't like it and want it removed -- it appears to be a duplicate of ours at Lincoln Park. I'm hoping that dissent doesn't catch on here.
I always liked the statue. I understood it had been paid for by freed-slave wages as a commemoration to Lincoln's emancipation act, winning the civil war and overcoming slavery. Maybe it needs a placard to explain it so it is in not interpreted to be a subordinating figure but one that rejoices for the triumph over the evils of slavery. 
I thought it would be nice to have a corresponding statue of Obama (in the same style) in the place of the Mary Bethune statue to show the power of the transition from the emancipation Lincoln brought about but it's something that has to get processed through the national parks system and I think congress. (Mary Bethune statue could be moved to her college)
I don't want people to react impulsively right now on this locally but I intend to write and ask Eleanor what she thinks. If I get a response, I'll share it with the group.

I need to find the site on Google emancipation statue Boston,  My brother just emailed me that Mayor Walsh of Boston is willing to remove the Lincoln statue---just like ours which is in Boston and replace it with a Black created statue.    We need to be aware that issues might arise with our Lincoln statue, which so many of us love.  Mimi Wolf
