Saturday afternoon around 1:30 I was in my kitchen looking out onto
Independence and observed a masked (N95-type) man whom I did not recognize
enter the gate, pick up a package, observe it, place it in his shopping bag
and exit. I went out to my back porch and shouted, "Is that yours" and he
said, "yes" and proceeded west on Independence Ave SE.
I quickly lost sight of him but got on my bike and went down 12 street
looking down the alleys and saw him in the alley between Walter and C
streets near the intersection with 13th. I was on 12th and he saw me and
began running north. At this time I contacted the police via 911 and gave
them the information. They called back but I was not able to provide much
detail of his appearance or present whereabouts.
This is interesting because when I walked the dog in the morning I went
through the alley between Independence and C streets where I observed two
new packages of Vigilante coffee sitting on a recycle bin where my dog has
chosen to pee. I wondered who throws out sealed bags of coffee. Then I saw
the "roasted on date" read June 10, just three days earlier. Below the
recycle bin was an open Amazon box with a new book in it and a bottle of
cocktail mix. Then it dawned on me that these might be items someone who
pilfered packages didn't want. I collected the items and returned them to
their owners.
I'm reporting all of this as a long winded advisory to my neighbors to not
order stuff if you can't be there to pick it up. The police,
understandably, never showed and I don't expect them to. And I am not
approaching thieves over stuff where someone can get hurt. I never got
closer than a full block and never intended to. Just understand that if
there is a brown truck on the street or the mailman delivering packages
there is often someone following him collecting packages. Use a drop box or
other arrangement to reduce the potential for crime.
