While this is a nice symbolic action, below is a list of steps you can take in addition to lighting a candle that can help make a difference in our community. 

| EIGHT ACTION STEPS FOR WHITE PEOPLE TO HELP END POLICE VIOLENCE

ONE
Follow Black Lives Matter DC and SURJ DC on social media. If you choose to protest in the streets, be sure you follow leaders of color. Do not center yourself, do not lead chants, and practice social distancing & wear a mask. Finally, do not post images of protestors’ faces online (or consider blurring their faces) as MPD’s Peter Newsham has explicitly said MPD will work to identify protestors.

THREE
DC Council is accepting testimony on the future of the DC Police (Metro PD) budget. This is a proposed budget of over $5 million for a new jail, and a $18.5 million increase to MPD in the midst of a global pandemic. This is not what we need right now, we need to defund the department and invest that money in community care. Submit testimony to the DC Council to defund the police: Instructions here.

If the idea of "defunding the police" seems too radical or even scary to you, learn more about what it actually means here.

Donate, we recommend setting up a recurring donation, to the DC Movement 4 Black Lives Money Pot (a coalition of black-led DC organizations) and donate to the DC Mutual Aid Network (see tab 3 titled “Fundraising Pages”).

I wanted to share that a group of area students is organizing a candlelight memoriam for victims of police brutality tonight. They're asking people to put candles outside their homes at 8:30 pm -- it was started by students in Maryland and is spreading throughout the area.
