[Lincolnparkdc] Response: Contractors

For the record, "queue" is a line or sequence of people or items awaiting their turn to be attended to or to proceed.

"Que" is the traditional abbreviation for the province of Quebec. Or how to ask "what?" in Spanish.

Hope this helps moving forward!

Subject: [Lincolnparkdc] Response: Contractors

No, I’m not rude, not disrespectful, not difficult to work with, and I’m quite knowledgeable about construction, building, contracting and accommodating to the needs of the workmen (including often supplying lunch and listening to their troubles). I’ve worked with small and medium contractors on the Hill as well as larger contractors such as Hitt Construction. Thus, your comment to me suggesting otherwise is not only insulting, but is immaterial, lacks merit and is without foundation.

I’ve been very happy with the contractors and other tradesmen who have worked for me, including some for over 30 years who I can show the problem and tell them to use their best judgement and fix it because I trust them (Jos. Bauer, Distads). But for smaller jobs, and I’ve found this to be a common observation, large and even medium contractors prefer and will put to the “front of the que” large jobs that will keep them occupied. (One contractor I contacted would not do any job for less than $125,000 and then only for its current customers, preferring jobs estimated at $200,000 and up. They also do very fine work). As for the contractors who came in, looked at several jobs in my homes, said they would do it, and then no-showed, I’m happy to give you the names of the most recent. As for the que, when I did a $40,000 rehab of my upstairs, I went to and stayed at the front of to the que.

Is it really your practice “to the back of the que” those who are troubled and impatient and may, in your estimation, be “rude or disrespectful” to you? In my practice, I generally sat back and listened.

Frankly, I thought my response was quite civil, thoughtful, respectful and helpful. As for my comment, I stand by it. There are a number of small business looking for the kind of work described.

But all things considered you might want to consider a security door for the back with provisions for a screen and storm-window. If you go the iron security door you might try Federal City Iron (301) 779-6136? or Northeast Iron (202) 529-9440?. Both have been around for decades.
