Hi Neighbors:
This is a bit of a long shot, but I thought I would try. I have a friend who is an absolutely amazing person. As a single Mom she is raising two incredible kids one of whom just finished his first year in college. Despite not having a college degree herself, she's built an admirable career doing security clearances for several different federal agencies. She herself has a Top Secret security clearance. Her other child, is in high school in the DC charter system. The problem is that she is getting killed by the rental prices in DC. She very much wants to stay in the city at least until her daughter finishes high school but sky high rent -- combined with the money she needs to contribute to her son's college tuition and expenses -- are killing her. She's looked into all of the city's programs to assist renters and first time home buyers, but so far nothing has worked (she's still investigating different options). She is trying to find a place with two bedrooms, in a relatively safe area, near bus routes for between $1200 and $1500 a month depending upon utilities. It's just about impossible.
It occurred to me that there might be someone on Capitol Hill who would be willing to forgo market rents for their basement (or other) apartment in order to lend a helping hand to an incredible person who is doing everything they can to be a great role model and help their children succeed. If you have an apartment, or know someone who does, and might be willing to help, please let me know. This might be a great arrangement for anyone who travels a lot and would like someone to cat or dog sit (the whole family loves pets) when they are out of town.
I know that many of us are working hard to make ends meet and I understand that for many, the rent on the basement apartment is what allows you to afford your house. But if you are one of the fortunate ones who could afford to get a little less in rent to help someone who is working incredibly hard for her kids, you could be a hero to a really great family and get stable, responsible tenants who can help walk and feed your critters when you are out of town. If this sounds like something you would be willing to try, please let me, Sarah von der Lippe, know. E-mail me at SCvdL at aol dot com.
Thanks for your consideration!
Sarah
