Neighbors,

If you are looking for a taste of Summer in a jar - especially on these
cold, grey days, consider buying some of my Capitol Hill honey. I've got
honey available in small, medium and large sizes which you can purchase
online at my website http://secondstoryhoney.com. I am happy to deliver
your order straight to your door.

This time of year people often ask me what the bees are up to. On cold
days like today the entire population of the hive clusters tightly into a
ball surrounding their queen. The workers flex their flight muscles to
generate heat and keep their queen at a toasty 75F. Generating heat takes
energy so the bees take turns moving closer to their queen/mother to be
near her and get toasty themselves. While their sisters rotate to the
outside edges of the cluster where they can grab a bite to eat from their
honey supplies. This ever-rotating cluster of bees keeps each of the
workers relatively warm and fed.

On Winter days when the weather warms up above 50 degrees the workers will
make foraging flights to find food. At this time of year they'll find
pockets of winter honeysuckle or skunk cabbage blooming along the Anacostia
and bring back much-needed pollen - a protein source for raising new bees.
Although it is too cold for me to open up the hives to take a look, the
queen has begun to lay eggs to raise the new bees for 2019. If all goes
well they should be emerging from their cells by Valentines day and begin
flying in early March.

Wishing you a sunny and sweet 2019.

Jan
