Hi Neighbors,
If you're looking for local honey and candles to enjoy for the holidays and
to give as gifts I still have some available. You can see the selection at
secondstoryhoney.com.
Free delivery to the 20002 and 20003 zip codes. Deadline for orders to be
shipped by USPS is tomorrow at 10pm.
What are the bees up to in this cold?
They are huddled together in a tight cluster about the size of a volleyball
with their queen in the center. The worker bees flex their wing muscles to
generate heat so they can keep their queen a toasty 75F. The bees in the
center of the cluster take turns moving to the outside edge of the cluster
so their sisters on the outer edges can move to the center and warm up.
They'll keep up this effort all through the winter and gradually consume
their winter honey stores.
Come late January, the queen will start laying eggs. When the eggs arrive
the workers will ramp up their efforts to keep the temperature in the bee
nursery a steady 92F no matter how cold the weather is outside the hive.
Such amazing creatures!
Thanks to everyone who has supported the bees and me this year. Wishing
you a happy holiday season and a wonderful new year!
Your friendly neighborhood beekeeper,
Jan
