Thanks for your reassuring comments. If u r that close to the issue I will defer to your positive ideas. I unfortunately recall the horrible places on NY Ave where the families lived. Homeless hotels that were horrible. In addition I always fear for the greed and corruption of some of the “plans” that r given to private programs through grant proposal. They were notoriously corrupt in their allocation of funds to housing. So I don’t think we should ever have that back.

I work at DC DHS (although not on the homeless side). As Joanne said, there will be 8 emergency shelters across each Ward of the city. You can see both the plan and the progress here: https://dcdhs-fsa.github.io/DCGeneral/
To be sure, there is still much to be done. But in all my time at DHS, I have never heard that the goal is to "hide families". Quite the contrary, by closing DC General, which should be celebrated, families in need of emergency shelter are in smaller structures, with rich resources, across the city.
I would also invite those who are critical to engage. When families exit shelter, they often move to single family transitional housing. For those who are landlords, there is an opportunity to engage. Many seek training and career advancement. For those in position of management, there is an opportunity to engage. Many seek enrichment and friends for their and children. For those with children of their own, there is an opportunity to engage.
Again - I am more than happy to chat about both the challenges as well as the opportunities we all have to make DC a better home for all of us.

Hiding homeless families does not help the homeless. It hurts families and children and for sure doesn’t end homelessness.

Happy Halloween neighbors--Here's your treat.
Yesterday, Mayor Bowser quietly closed the DC homeless shelter in the old DC General hospital which housed up to 1,000 people in our neighborhood. Now there will be smaller shelters of about 50 and hotel rooms spread across the city so not all in one area.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Washington Mayor Muriel E. Bowser has closed a troubled city shelter that made headlines in 2014 when an 8-year-old girl disappeared from it.
The Washington Post reports Bowser officially closed D.C. General Tuesday, partially fulfilling her 2014 campaign promise of replacing it with smaller shelters. The last two families left Monday. Two of the seven promised shelters opened last month.
D.C. General is a former hospital that has been used as a homeless family shelter since 2001. It housed as many as 1,000 people at its peak, with many complaining about poor living and safety conditions.
