Thanks Mark-
I have been intrigued with the tankless water heaters since we had our
current water heater installed and that technology was just getting
popular. What scared me off then, and now, is it sounds like there's
additional gas piping that has to be run, they have to be flushed or some
other maintenance every six months (which sounds onerous) and so overall
sounds super expensive? Maybe I've got it all wrong, so I'd love to hear
how you made the decision to go with tankless.

This isn't directly responsive to your question but something to
consider. We went from a tank to a tankless water heater a few years ago
and have not regretted it. The upfront costs are higher, but the lifespan
of the systems are also supposed to be higher. You never run out of hot
water and you gain precious space back in a Capitol Hill home.

So if you have the luxury of enough time to consider it, it may be worth
getting a quote. If you're interested in hearing about a first hand
experience with one, I'm happy to talk about it. Feel free to contact me
directly.

Many thanks.

Mark

Sorry if you see this post more than once!

Our hot water heater has died and to replace the part is about half the
price of getting a new hot water heater. Since ours is probably around 13
years old, we figured we might as well get a new one. Has anyone had a
water heater installed recently? Our first quote is $2100 which seems high
to me, but maybe this is the going rate now. I seem to recall we only paid
about $1000 13 years ago.

Thanks everyone-

We have had a tankless water heater for about ten years. It is very
efficient. I think it was about $900. I bought a Japanese model on
line. When I bought they had been marketing for industrial processes for
making hot water (car wash). I see that home depot has been selling them
for a few years now too. I did clean the burner side two times but have not
heard anything about the water side needing cleaning. I would have liked to
mount it in the attic crawl space but it was easier to use the space in the
basement due to the exhaust already there.
